Learning how to manage risk - this is the scenario:
$AI is reporting earnings today, after the day's close on May 31 (Weds)
May 31 - I've held 20% of my position to see what happens after earnings come out
May 30 - sold 80% of my shares incrementally over the day. On May 29 I had 3/4 of my small account (started with $1500) in this stock and I realized the risk of:
-Not being able to trade other, better-performing tickers (i.e. today I only could buy 100 shares of $MARK and I actually traded it for +3%)
-For AI - what if there were huge gains? BUT what if I was wrong about earnings and it tanks? I would be risking over 50% of my account and it would be difficult to build back up
-The Nasdaq took a downward turn today and AI was tracking similarly for quite a bit of it while it showed some strength while QQQ was red. Notably now it's turned upwards and AI is tracking in parallel.
-This is a case of having an upcoming earnings catalyst in a hot sector.
At this point I can't afford to be overly aggressive. It'll be interesting to see how the earnings report will impact the price.
AFTER HOURS: AI has released their earnings:
C3.ai expects to see Q1 revenue of between $70 million and $72.5 million, a hair more than Wall Street's expectation of $72.1 million.
Here are the most important numbers from the report compared to what analysts’ were looking for, based on data compiled by Bloomberg.
-
Revenue: $72.4 million versus $71 million expected
-
Adj. loss per share: $0.13 versus $0.17 expected
After hours - the stock dipped to the low $30s right at 2PM PDT when the news was released. Now it's on a steady climb up to $34.62 - solid 7 green 1-minute candles in a row
June 1/23 UPDATE
$AI's stock price at the open dropped to the low $30s and eventually got up to a high of $36. At the close, it's still above VWAP around $34.
This was a prime lesson of not holding into earnings. I ended up notably buying a few more shares at (sigh) $35.70 - I believe this is an emerging sector that is not going away. But I will retain 3/4 of my account for day trades only... NO BAG HOLDING!!
