Your experience sounds a lot like mine. Jumped into what I called "spike trading" in early 2000s, it worked great for awhile then market changed and I started loosing money. Thankfully I got out with some profit left. Switched to long term (momentum) strategies, not am jumping back into intraday mostly for amusement.

@PixelBender I see you are using E-Trade. Do you know if they charge multiple commissions if you have a large order that has partial fills? For example, if you want to buy 5000 shares of a penny stock and they need to fill you in 3 different orders, do you pay 3 different commission? Thank you!

1 commission per order, if the 1 order takes a few fills to complete it's still only 1 commission. Same goes for your exit. If you want to scale in and do it over multiple orders they will charge commission on each order.

I am kinda new, however, I am pretty sure they only charge you for each order, buy or sell, that you make.

First, I recommend calling or emailing E-Trade to get all the information you need. As for your question, they charge you based on how many times you click the button, not how they have to carve up your order. In the case you described they will charge you one commission fee, not three.

Thanks! I currently have Interactive Brokers and although everyone claims they have the lowest commision at $1 per trade, they also charge a half a cent per share so if I buy 5000 shares of a penny stock it costs me roughly $26 per trade. I am not sure why Tim or more people don't bring this up when they brag about the fees at IB. I will call e-trade and see.

@bmh23 Hey Brian, hope you don't mind me asking but did you really take a $20,000 loss on a trade like it shows in your charts? To be honest that scares the heck out of me. I am very new here. Thank you.

Also just to answer your initial question I had deleted all my trades at one point just so I didn't have to look at them. Was just trying to start fresh mentally but I decided to put back my total losses since I started so I just added it together and put it in as one.

I'm new here as of yesterday. Kudos to you Sir for 1) being transparent about these losses and 2) for keeping at it. I wish you the best Sir.

@redneck50pig Thanks...got to keep moving forward and learn everyday. Stick to rules don't make the same mistakes I did and still do sometimes. Good luck and stay with it.
