@MarkAus Hey mate, I am across the ditch in NZ and want to open a day trading account to be able to do shorts as well. I contacted eTrade yesterday and they told me that they are not opening accounts for APAC residents until further notice! I'd like to know if you've made any progress or have any recommendations

Hi, good to see some chatting. Since my Thailand trip Im yet to follow up on trading. Will soon. I was looking at eTrade as they allow buying\selling of USA shares. As for short selling: Non-Americans don't seem to be allowed. Im still researching though. No APAC accounts? I'll have to look into that. No eTrade could be a very bad thing.

Back from Thailand and with a tummy bug = ouch. Soon ill sign up with eTrade. Then Ill investigate the better brokers where you need lots of cash just to be with them. They're suppose to allow the ability to short better then other brokers. Another thing my course hasn't investigated.

@Animazing I'm in Australia and Tim's choice of Brokers are more for US residence. Check with brokers in your country first. Ask lots of questions. Especially about shorting stock as this requires a margin account and many brokers won't let you have one. They either don't allow shorting USD or don't allow shorting low price stocks. Tims strat to short stock is tough when finding a broker.

Oh, this was in reply to your question about finding stocks on one of Tims vids. Cheers.

eTrade apparently allows buying and selling of USD shares. I won't be able to short sell unfortunately but I guess its better then nothing. Dec 31st I'm flying to Thailand for a month so I'll suss them out and sign up after that. A concern of mine is once I eventually have enough $$ to sign up with a better broker they too won't allow International users. That would be a big problem. More research to do...

Finding a broker requires lots of Google searchs, using forums and then contacting the broker if you have questions. Its annoying as hell. Its a shame the teachers at my course didn't do this homework as it's effecting my study big time. Its actually costing me.

so what you mean is its illegal or restricted to short sell in australia is that right?

MarkAus

Short selling isn't illegal. It just seems impossible to short sell anywhere but Australia. The brokers won't let you. Currently I'm looking at eTrade but we may be forced to only buy\sell stocks. Not short sell. Hope that helps.

What sort of trading do you wish to do? Buy\sell? Options? Short selling? What country?

Broker issues cont. IB is dead. Suretrader looks like a gimmi but their software sux. eTrade might be my only option as an Aussie wanting to trade USD. Pretty sure their prices are high though and may not be able to short. Wish I had known how fkn bad it is to just find a broker for trading USD before I signed up to this. I had other options and I had to pick the expensive one. *rolls eyes*

No luck on finding a broker or working things out with IB. All this talk about Aussies using IB seems like a load of bull. I've asked for help and hope to hear something soon.

Turns out Interactive Brokers wants me to have a Margin account yet won't give me one. My cash account needs to be over 100k. Well, more lessons learned here I suppose. Unfortunately my options seem to be extremely limited here in Australia when it comes to trading usa and having the ability to short sell. Time to start researching all over again.

@MarkAus Hi. Also in Aus (WA). Interested in Trading pennystocks, but have no idea where to start. NO trading experience. Sounds like you're a little further along, but still new enough to relate! Perhaps we can learn together?

Hi Mr Freaky. Yep, learned a lot but need to put it into practice. Unfortunately my IB account is playing up. Still, I get up early and watch the tickers. Are you in a course or just looking into trading?

Hi Mark. I've decided to do the Wealth Within Stock Trading Course. It's based here in As and is accredited and has FEE HELP option (so no upfront costs). Check it out, if you haven't already!

Cheers for the update! Looks like a beginner course - Not a bad thing. Just be careful in what you pay as there are many books out there teaching the basics. Most of the work comes into researching companies and how to do so. I don't see anything of this mentioned when I search around. Also, there are many methods of using th stock market. Options, buying shares, shortselling etc. Do they have a system for you to use? Is it long term investing or short? Ahh so many questions. I'm interestin

[Edited post] Managed to stay up to 3:30am to trade. IB rejected my first ever attempted trade though. Apparently I need a margin account! Not a cash account. Oh well. If I did I would have been up 60c per share. It seems my lessons have paid off... mentally. VGGL was the chart for tonight and not on the daily WatchList. Tim however is a crazy good trader. ha.
