2015 looks finished for me: I invested a lot with Guru's hoping to learn trading along with a strategy. Mostly it's been educational but also way overpriced and frustrating. Stay away from premium priced Guru's with their insane marketing. Stick with cheaper, transparent Guru's if need be and know none support international users very well. Stay away from 'yearly subscriptions' & alerts. Monthly sub is best to test the waters of a Guru as most can't teach for shit. Next I plan to get my account in the green (next year) and prey to the dark gods that I can trade through America's economy bubble explosion. Even then I still need a broker that works! A bane in my side! GL.

@bennos Careful with the Guru thing. I found Tim to be a waist of time. Superman seems to have a strong following but he seems pretty hardcore. I liked the Investors Underground vids but at the same time was dissapointed with it. Best advice: Try one with a month to month sub. That way you can leave. Don't pay anyone annual fees. Trial everyone, trust no one.

@markaus that doesn't sound too promising :( was hoping for more positive words but appreciate the honesty. would you mind providing more details on Tim's sub or any others you've tried? I'm in Sydney and the US market opens at midnight here so am quite hesitant to start cause of work, if I could be up all night and sleep all day it'll be a different story

@bennos I'm in Sydney as well (Near Cronulla). You will learn stuff from everyone unfortunately it comes with a large cost and little learned. Tims teaching is messy, overpriced and he isn't good at teaching. IU has very clear explanations on things but doesn't explain as much as they say they will at the start of their DVDs. Almost seems rushed at times. I personally would try Superman for a few months if I had the spare cash but I think I'm fine at trying it myself for a while. I'd be happy to

Last night was a real downer. FORD went up on a bounce but I didn't recognise it at the time. More profits missed. Its embarrassing as I should know this stuff easily by now. Its a pattern with me. --- Also my course has well and truly finished with the Challenge. I'm going to look at one of the Guru's at some point and most likely pay monthly. Its cheaper then the Challenge and can stop if life takes another dump on me.

Good to hear from you @mavrick41 I know what ya mean. As it is I've invested a lot of time with Tims strat so for now I'll keep going with it. My paper trading has been really good so I just need to stick with it for a while. Eventually ASX and Options would be something to learn. Right now though I'm trying to research which stocks to play with. You seem to know other strats about stocks I have no idea about.

Getting Divys sounds good yet something I still don't know much about.

mavrick41
mavrick41 Aug 31, 15 1:17 AM

your starting out on a much harder strategy with low chance of success even for experienced people its a tough high stress game and too many scammers in the industry because actually over 90% of traders lose I started over 20 years ago then got trading options biggest winner was 17 k never matched it again then trading cfds shares but I realize now the easiest and safest game is buying strong companies with a dividend for some income adding to the position regularly and adding some covered calls

mavrick41
mavrick41 Aug 31, 15 1:19 AM

I just sold calls over ncm got 6% for 5 mins work beats watching tiks go up and down and stressing range is between 3-6% a month call premium you can replace a wage with 50k

Start of the week!! Turns out my broker is stuffing me around again. Back to the books until they get their heads out of their A-holes and fix my stuff. 8 months I've been doing this and still can't trade properly. Sick of brokers. Hope you all have better luck than me!!! On the plus side it means I can't lose money. ;)

mavrick41
mavrick41 Apr 20, 15 7:40 PM

you could trade with cfds tons of markets and easy in out and no bs rules

MarkAus Apr 22, 15 4:49 PM

CFDs look good @mavrick41. Did a bit of reading on it. You can also purchase far more shares like options. Man, its a good week for trading and my broker seems to have decided to ignore me. My luck...

"OptionsXpress is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois". --- I was advised last year by OX support that their rules were different to the US laws and were based off Australian laws. Turns out this is incorrect and WIKI confirms it. My account has been "downgraded", to put it loosely, due to breaching the PDT rules. I wasn't aware I was effected by it. So, be aware, if you use OX you need $25k + in your account so you're not effected by the PDT rule. I'll be adding funds Monday so I can get back to some hands on learning. Call them to confirm if unsure.

Just had a read of this strat @sentinelgroup.com.au. It's very interesting. My friend at work knows tons on Options. Ill ask him about it. Looks like if you buy a big chunk of shares cheap you could go to town on it.

I dont have any links I didnt learn it from the net I did many courses and years of pratice and trial and error covered calls are fairly simple and low management with about 3-5% returns per month not the big so called returns on trading but that is if u can get em at least this way u hold a big blue chip shares and if u got 50k theres a wage of 1500 -2500 a month more than enough for thailand

Cheers Mav. I was just after some definitions to understand it better. Investopedia had good explanations. It's a good plan and something i'll look into as well later thanks to you. I'm not greedy, just want to stop the "9 to 5 career" thang.

@mavrick41 Hi Mav. Got a question. I went to short a stock at around $7 per share. OptionsX told me I require $30k in my account. Thats just a requirement right? Encase it go's the other way? Thought I'd get your confirmation cause you da man and all. :)

mavrick41
mavrick41 Mar 30, 15 10:54 AM

as far as im aware its 2k min also dont put in market orders put in limit orders as it jacks up the margin requirment.what stock you shorting?

MarkAus
MarkAus Mar 30, 15 3:32 PM

Sorry for late reply - Went to bed. Jeez you're hardcore trader! Ha. No I don't use Market only Limit. Ticker I don't remember but price was $7.6. Attempted to short 100 shares and said I require $31000 in the bank. I'll add more funds later. Just curious about the 3k.

MarkAus
MarkAus Mar 31, 15 4:28 AM

Talking to mate at work he said the 31k is just a margin call. In other words a backup for OX encase I blow my short and I owe them da monies. Thought so. Always good to double check.

Created my own Watchlist just for fun and went to bed at 9pm. Got online 1:30am only to find trading now starts at 12:00am. Hmm. Missed a few opportunities and only had an hour before I had to go back to bed. Checked Watchlist today and fair enough more opportunities slipped by. No surprise. Overall I did ok with the list and learned a lot. Unfortunately I need more time. Fun!! Plus using OptionsXpress is a big learning curve.

I think Prestomango is talking about 2nd Level. Watching multiple Asks\Buys on the fly. Darn good question and I can't find it. With other brokers you have to pay for it. I hope its another windw I can move to my other monitor.

I have a blog on opening 2nd level. Its not as big as other brokers though and not 100% how to use it effectively.

Next to no trading so far this week. What a bummer. I'm finding life and trying to get to sleep early is just not working. Currently I have taken leave just so I can attempt trading after Easter. Also going to try sleeping later, get up later (miss the open) and just see how I go. Also thinking about quitting my busy job and work part time on weekends with a mate just so I can spend the weeks trading. Lots of options, some pretty big but ya gotta do what ya gotta do! How do you lot do it?

Prestoman
Prestoman Mar 26, 15 2:51 AM

my sleep pattern is screwed i work shift work and literally every week has days and nights this week was our small 4 day week mon,tue dayshift then wed, thurs nightshift all 12.5 hours then i get 5 days of starting tomoro morning so im already all over the place. trading opens up at 11:30pm where im at

mavrick41
mavrick41 Mar 26, 15 6:34 AM

i wouldn't quit work for trading its like gambling i have done it for many years and very hard to rely on and very stressful if you do,my main strategy is a long term portfolio with some options and only taken certain trades it aint worth the risk or the time you put in it and beleive me i have learned it all

Good ol' Perth. Ha! I'm in dirty Canberra. I made my own Watchlist tonight. Took hours. Should be a fun night. Time for bed.... ZZzzz. Be sure to catch up on your rest.

MarkAus Mar 26, 15 3:28 PM

@mavrick41 Thanks for the headsup. I'd like to concentrate on learning as my course runs out in 4-5 months. Finding work isn't a big deal for me but I would be giving up a well paid job (if a daily job can be considered as such). Come Sept I could very well be looking for another proper job.

Attempted trading again since my IB mess. Unfortunately hitting bed at 6pm to get up at 1am doesn't always work. Had issues sleeping and forgot to turn phone off = No trading. Still made a Watchlist, went over charts come morning and watched Tims new vid about them. AXMM did really well last night but optionsXpress doesn't allow shorting under $5 so wasn't really watching it. Think I'll setup some Alerts next time. Good to be back. Hope to post more and get feet wet !!

ive just been following nathans twitter and a couple he mentioned last week were gainers around the 40% on thursday alot of action it seemed then come friday most went down just an observation.

O.X fee's seem to be $5 to $10 per trade. Not much at all considering fees for other brokers can hit around $80 per trade. I've heard some pro's state "it doesnt matter the fee price" but it does if you're new and trying to get your feet wet (like me!!!).

MarkAus
MarkAus Mar 24, 15 3:39 PM

@mavrick41 Tim trades often and he isn't afraid to lose a few hundred or thousand. If you can't do that I wouldn't copy him. He also buys a lot of shares. Setup a Watchlist, add some alerts and follow those. Have a plan before you trade. I need to get my experience up so I don't sound like a know-it-all noob haha. Thats my plan anyway.

Application for OptionsXpress is now active! It's good to know I have a broker again. Next few days I'll play with it and next week attempt some fake or real trading (I'm a little rusty). At some point I'll add some updates in regards to this broker.

MarkAus
MarkAus Mar 12, 15 6:17 AM

Alerts are all well and good but if you don't know the company Tim is tagging, it's history, why its tickers are moving the way they are etc then trading can be dangerous. Still, can also be profitable! Ha. Training myself to find my own stuff.Tricky.

mavrick41
mavrick41 Mar 12, 15 8:03 AM

there charts can do multiple charts up to 9 just go to tab then grid view handy for monitoring a few trades on a 1 min time frame like tim does
